Tip of the Week! The Best Time for Christmas Shopping is…. December 26th?

When you become frugal enough, you eventually earn the nickname “Scrooge” from your significant other. It is Mr. and Ms. Red to Riches’ first Christmas together in their first house. Ms. Red to Riches has been requesting a Christmas tree for weeks, but Mr. Red to Riches, aka Scrooge, proclaimed it is a waste of money. We’re both in saving money mode, myself a little more than her, so we compromised. We revived a sad, forgotten, little tree from her parents’ basement. Over the course of the last few weeks, I’ve been told several times by family and friends that a nice tree is only a couple hundred dollars. A couple hundred dollars?! That is some serious coin for a couple determined to get out of debt as soon as possible. If we gave into the above arguments every time they came up (new furniture, new door, new window, etc) we would be in some serious trouble. It goes back to one of my primary principles. If everyone else is doing it, it probably isn’t good. And there is probably opportunity to improve your life in some form by doing the opposite. For example, most people are not prepared for Christmas even though we all know Christmas occurs every year on the same exact day. When do most consumers buy wrapping paper, ornaments, and Christmas trees? Between Thanksgiving and Christmas! Of course the retailers know this. In certain parts of the U.S. where St. Nick is celebrated in the first week of December, the retailers even know to price chocolate higher and then reduce it 50% the day after (I made this mistake this year, but next year I will be prepared!).   My tip of the week? Buy Christmas supplies right after Christmas! Yesterday, the 26th of December, I went to Walmart to buy some groceries and I decided to make a quick detour to the Christmas section to see what the deals were. Everything was clearly marked 50% off! The same wrapping paper I bought a week or two ago is now 50% off. So were the trees and ornaments!
